TIDAL SHIFT is a recent series of large-scale paintings that delves into the bays and coves of Australia through an abstract lens, focusing on the dynamic flow of water, the ebb and tide, and the subtle transitions between land and sea. This body of work does not seek to represent these coastal landscapes literally, but rather to evoke the feeling of being immersed in them—the ever-shifting contours of water meeting land, the quiet, rhythmic pulse of the tides.
The act of painting becomes a direct response to the environment, using mop brushes, sponges, and fluid techniques that mimic the organic movement of water. Each stain, wash, and layer builds up over time, allowing the mediums to speak for themselves. Pouring, brushing, and sponging all serve to mirror the unpredictable, yet rhythmic nature of the coastline, where the ocean's contours constantly change in response to wind, tide, and time. The paintings evolve as a dialogue between the artist and nature, where control gives way to the natural flow of the materials.
The subtle gradations of color and texture reflect both the stillness and turbulence of the bays and coves, inviting viewers to engage in a personal, introspective experience of the landscape. The forms, abstracted and fluid, speak to the transience and permanence of nature—its constant transformation, its resilience, and its inherent beauty. Through Tidal Shift, the connection between water, land, and the natural elements is explored, while the mediums themselves inform the process, speaking a language of impermanence and serenity.
