Helen Otway

Welcome

I’m so glad you’ve found your way here. I’m Helen Otway, an artist based in Australia. My work draws inspiration from the rhythms of nature — the shifting light, quiet coastlines, and the traces of human presence within the landscape.
Here you can explore my latest paintings and textile works, discover what’s currently on exhibition via my Home page, and find out where my art is available — both through galleries and directly from my studio. Previous exhibitions are found on my Exhibitions page.
You can view selected artworks via the drop down menu to reveal each series:If These Walls Could Talk, Silva Luna, Forest Glow, Tidal Shift, Sacred Rocks, Minis & Postcard Paintings, Tweed Valley Series, Spiritus.  And you can learn more about my work at Byron School of Art 2024-2026 including available works.
You can visit my studio on Wednesdays and Saturdays at Studio K1 at M-Arts Precinct in Murwillumbah.  Other days by appointment.

WAITING - HELEN OTWAY

WAITING (2025) is a painting where absence and memory intersect. It holds a stillness as a form of story-telling. The dimly lit room with a mannequin, a chair and a cupboard slightly ajar, provide an introspective, psychological tone, of how space remembers, how matter absorbs emotion, and how the past continues to breathe through the everyday.

Winter Glow - Brunswick Street Gallery  11–26 July 2026

Browse Winter Glow
In an age of brightness and exposure, these two small works linger in the half-light. Drawing on Tanizaki's celebration of shadow and Bachelard's reflections on the intimate spaces of home, they attend to the quiet glow of winter — moments where warmth is found not in illumination itself, but in the shelter, memory and imagination that gather around it.
