SPIRITUS

Spiritus (2026)

Spiritus (2026) brings together works that sit between observation and quiet abstraction. Referencing the tidal mangrove systems of Northern NSW, the paintings hold a tension between organic growth and measured structure. Branches extend across the surface like fragile networks, while the lower fields are built through repetitive, hand-rendered marks.

These repeated gestures draw from the disciplined sensibility of Agnes Martin, where subtle variation and restraint invite a slower mode of looking. Here, the grid is softened—less a rigid system than a field of attention shaped by time, care, and touch.

Materially and conceptually, the works consider interconnection: between land and water, control and release, the natural and the made. The mangrove, both resilient and vulnerable, becomes a quiet metaphor for holding—of memory, of place, and of the unseen structures that sustain us.

I use a range of materials: linen, silk thread, banana silk, cotton slub, hessian, gauze, muslin, metal, seedpods, drift wood, clay, paint, graphite and coloured pencils.

This new body of work is still evolving and is part of my studies at the Byron School of Art.  There are currently a few more works in the pipeline and they will be added to the website in due course.  The works are not for sale right now.  Please get in touch if you would like to know more.
